Where is commencement being held?

Both ceremonies are being held at the Amica Mutual Pavilion (formerly the Dunkin' Donuts Center), which is located at 1 LaSalle Square in downtown Providence, RI.

Where can I park?

There are ample parking facilities nearby (rates will vary). The parking facility at the RI Convention Center, which connects to the Amica Mutual Pavilion, is one option. Another option is JWU’s Downcity Parking Garage, which will be open during commencement with Wildcat Wheels bus service between locations.

What time should I arrive? When do doors open?

Allow appropriate time to park, pass through security and be seated. Each ceremony has a prompt start time (see home page for dates and times).

  • Graduate Studies Ceremony: Doors open at 9am (please arrive by no later than 9:30am)
  • Undergraduate Ceremony: Doors open at 1pm (please arrive by no later than 1:30pm)

Is there a security check?

Yes, all individuals must pass through security checkpoints. See what’s not allowed (this includes balloons, outside food & beverages, and other items).

Where do graduating students enter?

  • Leave large items with guests
  • Use the service road on the left side of the Amica Mutual Pavilion (near the hotel & Starbucks) - do not enter via the front entrance
  • Follow it to the end, enter via the back of the building and pass through the security check
  • If you don’t have your name card, pick it up at the welcome table
  • Follow signs to assemble with your college/major
  • Line up with your friends & classmates - there is no alphabetical order
  • Use the restroom now because you must stay seated during the ceremony (you may not leave)
  • Ushers will guide you when to enter the seating area, and later, when to proceed to the stage
  • Be ready, pay attention to those in front of you, and keep the line moving
  • Before heading up the stairs to cross the stage, you will receive a diploma cover (yours to keep)
  • At the top of the stairs, hand your name card to the announcer, walk to center stage to greet the dean, and then return to your seat

Where do guests enter?

  • Use the front entrance doors
  • Pass through the security checkpoint and find any open seat
  • Refer to the Amica Mutual Pavilion website for accessibility information; neither they nor JWU provides wheelchair or ambulatory assistance

Note: Bathroom facilities are available only after you pass through security and enter the concourse. There are none in the lobby.

Are there professional photographers?

Yes. As each grad approaches/crosses the stage, professional photographers will take a series of quick photos. They will be available online at after the ceremony.

Grads, families & friends are welcome to return to campus after the ceremony to take personal photos. Gaebe Commons and the Wildcat statue at Harborside are popular spots!
